A setting undoubtedly makes a movie. Some locations offer a variety of settings that work well for a multitude of movies. Florida, for example, is a location that many good movies have been filmed in. Even if the movie does not state that it takes place in the sunshine state, chances are that some scenes were filmed there. Beaches, swamps, upscale areas, and plenty of mansions create the possibility for all kinds of movies to be filmed there. Below is a list of good movies filmed in Florida.
- Edward Scissorhands
Starring iconic Johnny Depp and Wynona Ryder, the movie was filmed in 1990. The love story between a normal girl and a strange man unfolded in Lakeland, Tampa Bay, and Lutz.
- Ace Ventura: Pet Detective
Comedian, Jim Carrey, rushed to stardom in this movie when he played a pet detective intent on finding the kidnapped Miami Dolphin’s mascot. Filmed in Miami, this iconic film showcased the Pro Player Stadium, which is home to the Dolphins.
- 2 Fast 2 Furious
Though there are currently seven films in the series, the second was filmed in areas such as West Palm Beach, Hollywood, Miami, and Boca Raton. Following the street racing scene of an ex-cop played by Paul Walker, this film showcases the struggle between maintaining friendships while striking a deal with the FBI. The sunshine state’s landscapes highlight the luxurious aspects found in this movie. Money, nice cars, and mansions–what could go wrong?
- The Bodyguard
The 1992 film starring Whitney Houston is a romantic thriller. After a run in with a stalker, Houston hires a bodyguard. As their relationship unfolds, the only thing beautiful about the budding romance is the scenery offered by Miami Beach.
- Magic Mike
While the main eye candy to be found in this film is Channing Tatum’s muscles, Tampa Bay, St. Petersburg, Tarpon Springs, Tierra Verde, and Ybor City fall closely in line. Ironically enough, the movie about male strippers stars the ex-Florida stripper, Tatum.
- Cape Fear
Though heavily set in North Carolina, iconic parts of this movie were filmed in Fort Lauderdale, the Everglades, and Hollywood. After a profound attorney knowingly withholds evidence that sends an innocent man to prison for fourteen years, his release results in the obsession to stalk and destroy the man and his family.
- The Waterboy
Though set in Louisiana, Florida natives are easily able to spot iconic landmarks in Lakeland, Orlando, DeLand, and Jacksonville. Starring Adam Sandler, this film follows the life of a college football team’s waterboy. After a coach learns of the boy’s ability to fight well, he drafts him on the team.
- Key Largo
For those who simply love classic, timeless movies, mention must be made to this film. Set in Key Largo in 1948, the film follows Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. Bogart heads to Key Largo to pay respects to his late military buddy, but stays to take care of his widow and father. Bacall operates a hotel and upon helping her, Bogart discovers that mobsters are slowly but surely taking over the hotel. Hurricanes, gangsters, and love- oh my!
